Lost or Stolen iPhone — What Should You Do First?
A lost or stolen iPhone is a major source of stress for anyone, as our phones hold our personal photos, banking apps, and private messages. The key is to stay calm and act quickly. Apple’s security ecosystem is exceptionally robust, allowing you to safeguard your personal information remotely.
1. Use Find My and Track the Location
The first step is pinpointing your device's location:
- Go to icloud.com/find from any computer or browser, or use the Find My app on a family member's Apple device.
- Sign in with your Apple ID.
- Select your missing iPhone and check its last known location on the map.
- If the phone is nearby (for example, at home or in the office), you can play a sound (Play Sound).
2. Turn on Lost Mode
If you are certain your phone is lost or has been stolen, activate Lost Mode (Mark As Lost) immediately:
- In Find My, select your iPhone and tap "Activate" under Mark As Lost.
- Provide a contact phone number and a short message (e.g., "Please contact me at this number"), which will appear on the locked screen.
- Lost Mode automatically locks the screen with your passcode and suspends Apple Pay cards so no one can access your funds.
3. Suspend Your SIM Card and Report to the Police
Taking these additional steps is just as crucial:
- Contact your mobile carrier: Request a temporary suspension of your SIM card (or eSIM) so unauthorized individuals cannot receive SMS verification codes to access your bank or social media accounts.

4. Remote Erase (Erase iPhone) — When Should You Use It?
If you have lost hope of recovering the device, you can select Erase This Device via iCloud. This will permanently wipe all data from your iPhone.
Important Warning: Even after erasing your data, do not remove the device from your Apple ID account (do not tap "Remove from Account"). As long as the phone remains linked to your account, Activation Lock stays active—preventing anyone else from activating it and rendering the phone useless.
