How to Wipe Personal Data Before Selling Your Phone: The Proper Reset

2 min read Updated: 2026-09-04

Before selling or trading in your old smartphone, one of the most critical steps is properly wiping your personal data (the right reset). Manually deleting photos or contacts one by one isn't enough — you need a complete, secure factory reset so the new owner has zero access to your private information.

1. Create a Backup

Before erasing everything from your device, make sure your important files are backed up:

  • On iPhone: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap "Back Up Now".
  • On Android: Open Settings > Google > Backup and make sure your data is synced with Google Drive.

2. Make Sure to Sign Out of All Accounts

This is a crucial step. If you reset the phone without signing out of your accounts first, activation lock (FRP or iCloud Lock) will trigger, leaving the buyer unable to use the device.

  • On Apple devices: Turn off "Find My iPhone" and sign out of your Apple ID (Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out).
  • On Android devices: Remove your Google and manufacturer accounts (e.g., Samsung) via Settings > Accounts > Google > Remove Account.

3. Perform a Factory Reset

To permanently and securely erase all data, use the official factory reset feature:

How to Reset an iPhone:

  1. Go to: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Select Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode and confirm. Once finished, the screen will display the initial "Hello" welcome screen.

How to Reset an Android Phone:

  1. Open Settings > System / General Management > Reset.
  2. Select Factory Data Reset.
  3. Tap Delete All or Reset Phone and wait for the device to reboot.

4. Don't Forget Physical Cards

Before handing over your phone, be sure to remove your SIM card and MicroSD memory card (if supported). If you use an eSIM, the system will prompt you during the reset whether to erase it — choose to delete it.

Tip from US MOBI: When selling a device, cleanliness and a properly reset system build trust with the buyer.
